Introduction

The end of the Southern League in 1997, saw the Canterbury clubs in that league choose between a Canterbury Premier League and a South Island League. The choice was not made on basis of Southern League placing and the standard of play in both leagues was similar. Chatham Cup matches between Canterbury League and South Island League clubs often reflected this. Both Leagues were discontinued when the Federation 6 League (which became the Mainland Premier League) was introduced in 2000.
