Introduction
During the late 1960s Rangers were part of the formation of Christchurch United AFC for the proposed forthcoming National League to start in 1970. Rangers provided a quarter of the A class shares in Christchurch United and also several prominent players, including Terry Haydon and Victor Pollard, who were both selected for New Zealand teams while playing for Rangers. Rangers still hold twenty five percent of the A class shares but do not exercise their right to have a director on United's board.
Determined to make National League status on their own, and in their own way, Rangers concentrated again on overcoming the loss of their best players to United and after a slow start, the 1970s were the most successful period in the club's history up to that time, culminating in automatic promotion (having won the 1979 Southern League) to the National League for 1980.
From 1993-96 the National League was replaced by Superclub, a regional competition with a final National round (Rangers qualified for the 1993 National round). Rangers applied unsuccessfully for entry to the National League when it was relaunched as a summer competition (1996-98). The National League was relaunched as a winter league in 2000. Canterbury United was formed with the backing of all Canterbury clubs to replace Christchurch City in the National League from 2002 (when the League reverted to summer). The National League was discontinued in 2003. In the summer of 2004-05 the New Zealand Football Championship was launched with Canterbury United one of the franchises included. Players with Canterbury United can be registered with a 'winter club' such as Rangers. In 2006-07 the Academy squads of National League franchises began participating in the National Youth League.
