MPL appeals
11 March 2008
Coastal Spirit FC's debut in the Mainland Premier League has been delayed by a season due to Burnside FC having greater success in court (regarding player eligibility) than they had on the playing field. Despite Mainland Football advising that all players were cleared to play in the 2007 playoffs, NZ Football overturned their earlier advice
with their Appeal Committee decision. This decision has been upheld by the Court for Arbitration in Sport. Coastal Spirit FC mens first team will play in the 2008 Division 1 (the old Qualifying League) with the aim of promotion to the Mainland Premier League for the 2009 season. One question which remains unresolved is: will Burnside continue their claims for there to be automatic relegation/promotion between these divisions?

Coastal Spirit FC's first match is against Halswell Christchurch United on Thursday 14 February, 8pm.

MPL Appeals
15 November 2007
Rangers AFC has been informed by NZ Football (NZF) that the NZF Appeals Committee has upheld an appeal from Burnside regarding a Rangers player's eligibility to appear in the Mainland Premier League playoff series - won on the field by Rangers. Mainland Football cleared all Rangers players' eligibility for the playoff series prior to the playoffs - but NZ Football Appeals Committee has over-ruled that decision. Rangers are now intending to launch a counter-claim and look forward to it resulting in Coastal Spirit FC playing in the 2008 Mainland Premier League.

Bain plays for Pride
11 November 2007
Ingrid Bain, Rangers goalkeeper, has appeared as a second half subsitute for Mainland Pride in the National Womens League. The Pride lost 4-2 at home to Capital; Ingrid played the final quarter of an hour, replacing the injured Olivia Jeffries when the score was 3-2. A few minutes later, a foul by a Pride defender resulted in a penalty - which Capital scored from. Meanwhile in the NZFC, Yusaku Okubo appeared as an 81st minute substitute for Canterbury United in their 0-0 draw at Otago United.

Fifii and Okubo make national league debuts for Canterbury Utd
5 November 2007
Rangers' Michael Fifii and Yusaku Okubo both played for Canterbury United in a 3-1 national league loss at home to Hawke's Bay United on Sunday. Okubo played for the first half - alternating between wide right and wide left positions. Yusaku received a yellow card shortly before half-time for what appeared to be persistent infringement of the rules. He was replaced at the break by Ryan Faichnie. Fifii appeared as a subsitute for the last quarter of an hour replacing Chris Morris.

Burnside 1 Rangers 2: Match reports
17 September 2007
Rangers retained our Mainland Premier League place with a 2-1 second leg win over Burnside at QEII Main Stadium on Saturday. After the first leg had ended 0-0, it was the victor of Saturday's game that would be the playoff winner. Both teams had numerous first half chances - but were unable to convert them into goals. Yusaki Okubo missed the target after beating the Burnside keeper in the first 5 minutes; before Burnside created two opportunities around the quarter-hour mark - with Rangers keeper Peter Hawker called upon to make a save. Almost immediately, Rangers had a series of corners which saw Okubo and Andy Grant have opportunities. Rangers' Player of the Year, Symon Beedles, was unable to put a far post header on target towards the end of the first half.
An even 0-0 at the break, but Rangers dominated the play in the second half. Five minutes in, Okubo put a cross onto the top of the frame of the Burnside goal - but the ball had already gone out for a goal-kick. Two minutes later, Rangers' Michael Fifii missed the target with only the goalkeeper to beat. Then disaster, a cheap giveaway and - against the run of play - Keith Grosvenor turned a cross in to put Burnside ahead. This sent the Burnside PA announcer into an almost non-stop barrage of attempted encouragement for the 'home' side. Fortunately, he was drowned out by Rangers' cheers seven minutes later, when a Nik Gebhardt solo run ended with Gebhardt shooting the equaliser form a tight angle. This goal also gave Gebhardt the lead in the Rangers first team top-scorer race.
Rangers pressed on for the winner. With 15 minutes left, Symon Beedles had a shot saved and Mark Pollock put the rebound over the Burnside bar. In the last 5 minutes of the match, Fifii rose high to head home the winner. In the scenes of ecstasy that followed, Fifii and Ekow Quainoo were shown yellow cards for the heinous crimes of removing their shirts over their head in celebration. In the last minute James Stewart was sent on as a sub for Okubo. Stewart almost grabbed a share of the top goalscorer award, but his shot - that beat the goalkeeper - was blocked by a Burnside defender. There was a tense moment as Burnside had a corner, but Peter Hawker claimed the ball and the final whistle went and Rangers had won.

Clean Sheet Pete
MPL Playoff Leg 1: Rangers 0 Burnside 0
8 September 2007
Veteran Rangers goalkeeper, Pete Hawker kept his second consecutive first team clean sheet as Rangers drew 0-0 with Burnside in the first leg of the MPL playoffs. On a sunny day, a large crowd saw Rangers get the better of the play against Qualifying League champions Burnside - but fail to secure a lead. Andy Grant had a chance cleared off the line by Burnside and Michael Fifi had a shot saved by the Burnside keeper within the first 20 minutes. John Gough was sent off midway through the second half, but Burnside failed to create any meaningful chances against the ten men, with Pete Hawker mopping up everything in the Rangers penalty area - following on from his clean sheet against Bays last week. In the last minute, Symon Beedles shot narrowly over the crossbar, and Rangers now face the return leg (away goals rule does not apply) at QEII Main Field, 2.30pm next Saturday 15 September.

MPL Playoff: Rangers v Burnside, Eric Adam Pk, 12 noon, Sat 8 Sep
4 September 2007
Rangers beat Ferrymead Bays 2-0 at Eric Adam Park to end the Mainland Premier League regular season on Saturday. First half goals to Symon Beedles and Nic Gebhardt and a clean sheet from goalkeeper Peter Hawker (who made 126 first team appearances for Rangers 1982-88) provided Rangers with the points that have been deserved but elusive in recent weeks.
The playoff against Burnside now awaits Rangers, with the first leg at Eric Adam Park, this Saturday 8 September at 12 noon (note early kick-off time). We encourage all club members and supporters to be present and cheer on our attempts to ensure a Mens Premier League place for next season. The second leg will be at QEII on Saturday 15 September 2.30pm.
It was agony for Barry's Presidents B in the Cup Final on Saturday as a last-minute extra-time goal meant the champions had a 3-4 loss to Ferrymead Bays. Rangers had a player dismissed in the first period of extra time, but prior to that had taken the lead in the first half of normal time when a long-range Stephen Mapletoft shot hit the crossbar - with Joe Kearns there to nod in the rebound. Bays equalised shortly after halftime. Graeme Shepherd restored the lead with a solo run and finish. Bays equalised from a corner to send the game into extra time. The teams traded goals in extra time, with a Phil Clayton through ball sending Joe Kearns into Bays' penalty area, where Kearns was fouled and Phil Harrison scored from the penalty spot (while Kearns was recovering from injury). Unfortunately, the sending off sapped a lot of Rangers' energy - having to make up the player difference - and, in the last minute, Bays got the winner.
Meanwhile, on the field next to Barry's, the Spikes (their second Cup Final in 25 years) took on Western in the Masters 45 Cup Final at Warren Park. Rangers' purple dazzled most of Canterbury football on Saturday, but Western ran out 6-0 winners.

Two teams in Cup Finals
27 August 2007
Barry's Presidents B side and the Spikes (Masters 45) have qualified for their knockout Finals next Saturday 1 September. Presidents B will take on Ferrymead Bays and the Spikes face Western. Both matches will be at Warren Park (pitches 1 and 5) at 12 Noon. Three other Rangers teams (Snows Div 2, Dipsticks Pres C, and Masters 1) won first round matches, but due to the shortened format did not progress as Finalists were determined by goals for.

Adam Cowen solid game in narrow World Cup defeat
24 August 2007
Adam Cowen played the full game and had an "absolutely outstanding perfomance" at the back for New Zealand - according to a tv commentator - as New Zealand lost 1-0 to North Korea and were eliminated from the U17 World Cup.

5 August 2007
A 2-1 win over Banks Peninsula has secured Rangers the Presidents B Championship. Rangers entered the match 8 points ahead of Burnside with 3 games each to be played.
