MPL appeals
11 March 2008
Coastal Spirit FC's debut in the Mainland Premier League has been delayed by a season due to Burnside FC having greater success in court (regarding player eligibility) than they had on the playing field. Despite Mainland Football advising that all players were cleared to play in the 2007 playoffs, NZ Football overturned their earlier advice
with their Appeal Committee decision. This decision has been upheld by the Court for Arbitration in Sport. Coastal Spirit FC mens first team will play in the 2008 Division 1 (the old Qualifying League) with the aim of promotion to the Mainland Premier League for the 2009 season. One question which remains unresolved is: will Burnside continue their claims for there to be automatic relegation/promotion between these divisions?

MPL Appeals
15 November 2007
Rangers AFC has been informed by NZ Football (NZF) that the NZF Appeals Committee has upheld an appeal from Burnside regarding a Rangers player's eligibility to appear in the Mainland Premier League playoff series - won on the field by Rangers. Mainland Football cleared all Rangers players' eligibility for the playoff series prior to the playoffs - but NZ Football Appeals Committee has over-ruled that decision. Rangers are now intending to launch a counter-claim and look forward to it resulting in Coastal Spirit FC playing in the 2008 Mainland Premier League.

The Pride lost 4-2 at home to Capital; Ingrid played the final quarter of an hour, replacing the injured Olivia Jeffries when the score was 3-2. A few minutes later, a foul by a Pride defender resulted in a penalty - which Capital scored from. Meanwhile in the NZFC, Yusaku Okubo appeared as an 81st minute substitute for Canterbury United in their 0-0 draw at Otago United.

Fifii and Okubo make national league debuts for Canterbury Utd
5 November 2007
Rangers' Michael Fifii and Yusaku Okubo both played for Canterbury United in a 3-1 national league loss at home to Hawke's Bay United on Sunday. Okubo played for the first half - alternating between wide right and wide left positions. Yusaku received a yellow card shortly before half-time for what appeared to be persistent infringement of the rules. He was replaced at the break by Ryan Faichnie. Fifii appeared as a subsitute for the last quarter of an hour replacing Chris Morris.

Burnside 1 Rangers 2: Match reports
17 September 2007
Rangers retained our Mainland Premier League place with a 2-1 second leg win over Burnside at QEII Main Stadium on Saturday. After the first leg had ended 0-0, it was the victor of Saturday's game that would be the playoff winner. Both teams had numerous first half chances - but were unable to convert them into goals. Yusaki Okubo missed the target after beating the Burnside keeper in the first 5 minutes; before Burnside created two opportunities around the quarter-hour mark - with Rangers keeper Peter Hawker called upon to make a save. Almost immediately, Rangers had a series of corners which saw Okubo and Andy Grant have opportunities. Rangers' Player of the Year, Symon Beedles, was unable to put a far post header on target towards the end of the first half.
An even 0-0 at the break, but Rangers dominated the play in the second half. Five minutes in, Okubo put a cross onto the top of the frame of the Burnside goal - but the ball had already gone out for a goal-kick. Two minutes later, Rangers' Michael Fifii missed the target with only the goalkeeper to beat. Then disaster, a cheap giveaway and - against the run of play - Keith Grosvenor turned a cross in to put Burnside ahead. This sent the Burnside PA announcer into an almost non-stop barrage of attempted encouragement for the 'home' side. Fortunately, he was drowned out by Rangers' cheers seven minutes later, when a Nik Gebhardt solo run ended with Gebhardt shooting the equaliser form a tight angle. This goal also gave Gebhardt the lead in the Rangers first team top-scorer race.
Rangers pressed on for the winner. With 15 minutes left, Symon Beedles had a shot saved and Mark Pollock put the rebound over the Burnside bar. In the last 5 minutes of the match, Fifii rose high to head home the winner. In the scenes of ecstasy that followed, Fifii and Ekow Quainoo were shown yellow cards for the heinous crimes of removing their shirts over their head in celebration. In the last minute James Stewart was sent on as a sub for Okubo. Stewart almost grabbed a share of the top goalscorer award, but his shot - that beat the goalkeeper - was blocked by a Burnside defender. There was a tense moment as Burnside had a corner, but Peter Hawker claimed the ball and the final whistle went and Rangers had won.

Clean Sheet Pete
MPL Playoff Leg 1: Rangers 0 Burnside 0
8 September 2007
Veteran Rangers goalkeeper, Pete Hawker kept his second consecutive first team clean sheet as Rangers drew 0-0 with Burnside in the first leg of the MPL playoffs. On a sunny day, a large crowd saw Rangers get the better of the play against Qualifying League champions Burnside - but fail to secure a lead. Andy Grant had a chance cleared off the line by Burnside and Michael Fifi had a shot saved by the Burnside keeper within the first 20 minutes. John Gough was sent off midway through the second half, but Burnside failed to create any meaningful chances against the ten men, with Pete Hawker mopping up everything in the Rangers penalty area - following on from his clean sheet against Bays last week. In the last minute, Symon Beedles shot narrowly over the crossbar, and Rangers now face the return leg (away goals rule does not apply) at QEII Main Field, 2.30pm next Saturday 15 September.

MPL Playoff: Rangers v Burnside, Eric Adam Pk, 12 noon, Sat 8 Sep
4 September 2007
Rangers beat Ferrymead Bays 2-0 at Eric Adam Park to end the Mainland Premier League regular season on Saturday. First half goals to Symon Beedles and Nic Gebhardt and a clean sheet from goalkeeper Peter Hawker (who made 126 first team appearances for Rangers 1982-88) provided Rangers with the points that have been deserved but elusive in recent weeks.
The playoff against Burnside now awaits Rangers, with the first leg at Eric Adam Park, this Saturday 8 September at 12 noon (note early kick-off time). We encourage all club members and supporters to be present and cheer on our attempts to ensure a Mens Premier League place for next season. The second leg will be at QEII on Saturday 15 September 2.30pm.
It was agony for Barry's Presidents B in the Cup Final on Saturday as a last-minute extra-time goal meant the champions had a 3-4 loss to Ferrymead Bays. Rangers had a player dismissed in the first period of extra time, but prior to that had taken the lead in the first half of normal time when a long-range Stephen Mapletoft shot hit the crossbar - with Joe Kearns there to nod in the rebound. Bays equalised shortly after halftime. Graeme Shepherd restored the lead with a solo run and finish. Bays equalised from a corner to send the game into extra time. The teams traded goals in extra time, with a Phil Clayton through ball sending Joe Kearns into Bays' penalty area, where Kearns was fouled and Phil Harrison scored from the penalty spot (while Kearns was recovering from injury). Unfortunately, the sending off sapped a lot of Rangers' energy - having to make up the player difference - and, in the last minute, Bays got the winner.
Meanwhile, on the field next to Barry's, the Spikes (their second Cup Final in 25 years) took on Western in the Masters 45 Cup Final at Warren Park. Rangers' purple dazzled most of Canterbury football on Saturday, but Western ran out 6-0 winners.

Two teams in Cup Finals
27 August 2007
Barry's Presidents B side and the Spikes (Masters 45) have qualified for their knockout Finals next Saturday 1 September. Presidents B will take on Ferrymead Bays and the Spikes face Western. Both matches will be at Warren Park (pitches 1 and 5) at 12 Noon. Three other Rangers teams (Snows Div 2, Dipsticks Pres C, and Masters 1) won first round matches, but due to the shortened format did not progress as Finalists were determined by goals for.

First teams still to regain winning form; but lower grades continue successful runs
21 June 2007
The Mens First Team can now concentrate on the league after being upset 3-2 by Avon United in the first round of the English Cup. The league campaign to avoid the relegation playoff will be difficult as a 3-1 lead over Halswell was blown the previous week - with a 3-3 draw leaving Rangers 11 points adrift. Rangers host Nelson Suburbs at Eric Adam Park, 2pm Sunday. Rangers beat Suburbs 4-2 away earlier in the season. The Womens First Team had no match scheduled last weekend due to Cup competitions for others in the league, but the week before they succumbed 5-0 to league leaders Western, who featured former NZ internationals, Kelly Jarden, Rachel Oliver and Sara Clapham.
There has been better results for some of the other mens teams, Division 2 moving up to second with good wins over Avon (6-0) and Burnside (2-0). Presidents B won 1-0 at Ferrymead Bays after Joe Kearns scored from close range after the Bays' crossbar had been hit twice within 5 seconds. This was followed up with a 5-1 win over Rolleston. The Dipsticks also lead their Presidents grade after a win and a draw over the past couple of weeks.
Adam Cowen has been on duty with the New Zealand U17s, the Rangers' defender has been in Korea at an 8-team, tournament where NZ has lost its first two games 2-1 to Nigeria and 3-0 to Japan. NZ can now not make the playoffs but will play USA in their final group match tonight.
Weekend Review 2-4 June
Out of the Cups
5 June 2007
Rangers' mens and womens first teams came close to progressing in the Chatham Cup and Reta Fitzpatrick Cup, but were both eliminated in close games on Monday. In Round 2 of the Chatham Cup, a disallowed goal and claims for a penalty saw Rangers scoreless in the first half against Woolston Technical. James Stewart scored a second half penalty for Rangers but it was not enough to match Tech's 2 first half goals.
Rangers are eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup for the third consecutive year. Sarah O'Brien missed an opportunity to give Rangers a second-half lead against New Brighton, when reaching the ball first following a goalkeeper error. Unfortunately, she scuffed her shot away from the empty net. Rangers' defence was solid for the first 100 minutes as the match went to extra time scoreless, but New Brighton scored 3 times in the final twenty minutes of extra time to go through.
It was scoreless for the Womens reserves in their Division 1 League match against New Brighton on Sunday, although a Rangers penalty hit the crossbar.
On Saturday, Rangers played Woolston Technical in the Mainland Premier League, losing 3-0 and goalkeeper Connor Chellew suffered a serious leg injury. He was replaced for the Chatham Cup match by Alan Stroud. Rangers' Womens Premier League team also failed to sparkle, losing 4-0 to the Mainland Academy. There was another win for Mens Division 2, 3-2 against Western, moving Rangers up to 3rd place. Both Rangers' Presidents teams continue to top their respective grades, each continuing with winning form. The Spikes had a win in Masters 45, 4-0 v Halswell's Old Hawks.
Weekend Review 26-27 May
Loss despite Fifi debut
31 May 2007
Michael Fifi made his debut for Rangers in the 5-0 loss to Nomads. (Photos on Mainland Football site) Our recent signing from Richmond City has been unable to give an initial boost to our Mainland Premier League results. But we hope that in coming weeks he will settle in and along with others such as new recruit Adam Cowen - a NZ age group international - will lift Rangers from the bottom. The Mens First Team face a crucial double header against Woolston Technical this weekend at Garrick Park. A 2.45pm Saturday match in the League, and on Monday a 2pm (note earlier kick-off) in Round 2 of the Chatham Cup. Our womens first team also have a tough double header with Mainland PDA on Saturday in the league and New Brighton also at Eric Adam Pk on Monday in the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Quarter-Final (both matches 12.30pm kick-offs). Unfortunately, the womens form slump continued conceding 4 goals to Halswell, before late replies from Sarah O'Brien and Erin Heine saved the scoreline from total embarrassment, bringing it back to 4-2. Presidents Bees 2006 Player of the Year Sanjay Chandran (now of North Wellington) paid a spectating visit to Cuthberts Green and didn't know which way to turn as Snow's Mens Div 2 wasted many chances in a 1-1 draw with New Brighton (NB were more pleased with the point than Rangers). While a couple of metres away, Presidents B continued their winning streak with a 6-0 win over second-place (prior to Saturday) Western. The Dipsticks are also top of the other Presidents grade beating Hornby 3-1. The Spikes had a 3-2 win over Bays in Masters 45. It is thought that the Division is called 45 as you have to be old enough to remember when the music singles charts were compiled entirely from 45 rpm records! On Sunday, Womens Division 1 grabbed a point with a late equaliser at Dux de Lux. In a bruising 2-2 encounter where the Dux clattered into anything that moved including their own players, the match finished with Rangers having 9 players on the field and the Dux with 10, despite substitutes being used - all injuries, nobody was dismissed.
Weekend Review 19-20 May
Chatham Cup win
22 May 2007
Rangers beat Christchurch United 2-0 in Round 1 of the Chatham Cup. Goals to Symon Beedles and Byron Goodwin see Rangers through to a tie against Woolston Technical at Garrick Park on Monday June 4. The Mens Reserves had a good 1-0 league win over Western, with Ekow Quainoo scoring. The Womens first team suffered a shock loss 2-0 at Avon United in windy conditions, although a Chloe Williams shot hit the Avon post at 0-0. Avon scored later in that second half and then grabbed a very late second - breaking away after Rangers had pushed everyone up for a corner. 4 goals each for Mens Division 2 and Presidents B at Ilam with 4-1 and 4-0 wins over Universities. Presidents C (Dipsticks) went back to the top of the table with a 6-0 win over Papanui-Redwood. Masters Division 1 moved up the table with a 1-0 win over Burnside. On Sunday, Womens Division 1 had yet another narrow loss, 2-3 v Western.
Weekend Review 12-13 May
3 MPL goals not enough
15 May 2007
More goals in Nelson for the Mens First Team, but 3 wasn't enough as Richmond City scored two late goals to win 5-3. Rangers had come back from 3-1 down to level 3-3 (Hue Frame, James Stewart and Byron Goodwin the Rangers scorers). The Womens First Team lost their top of the table clash with New Brighton (3-0 at Bexley). Since then Rangers have dropped to 4th place, as Brighton drew 1-1 with the Academy tonight. Presidents B continued their good form, despite being level at halftime 1-1 with Burnside. The Bees turned on a great second half performance to win 7-1, including a Bryan Ward hat-trick. Joe Kearns and Jason Wells each continued their goal or more a game run, with Glen Senior scoring his first of the season. In Presidents C, the Dipsticks continued their unbeaten run by having the bye. Snow's team grabbed a 2-1 win over Cashmere Wanderers in Mens Division 2. On Sunday, Womens Division 1 secured their long overdue first point of the season with a 1-1 draw with Universities. Spectators claim that the referee missed clear offsides in each half at the clubrooms end of Eric Adam Park. In the first half, the Rangers shot was tipped over the bar, while in the second half Universities scored from theirs. Better finishing would see this Rangers team further up the table.
Women regain winning touch
8 May 2007
Rangers have won their midweek Womens Premier League match v Mainland PDA at English Park tonight. Kassia Ford scored a long range goal with quarter of an hour remaining to seal the 3-2 win. The Academy had scored in the first minute following a series of defensive blunders. Rangers benefited from the PDA goalkeeper's error shortly after, with Chloe Williams coolly finishing. On the half hour, Rangers were ahead 2-1 with neat work from Laura Hughes feeding Erin Heine who confidently hit the ball in the net from around 16 yards. Rangers led 2-1 at halftime thanks to Rangers' Ingrid Bain saving a penalty, following a defender's handball in the box under little pressure. Five minutes into the second half and the Academy were level, but Rangers battled their way into the front and held on for the win, which takes Rangers level with second place Western and 2 points behind leaders New Brighton; who are Rangers next opponents - 12.30pm, Saturday 12 May, Bexley.
English Cup and Reta Fitzpatrick Cup draws
8 May 2007
Mainland Football have released the draws for this season's English Cup (Senior Men) and Reta Fitzpatrick Cup (Senior Women). Rangers will play at Avon United in the first round of the English Cup on a date yet to be confirmed. The winner of that tie will host Nomads United in the Quarter-Finals. In the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup, Rangers will host New Brighton on Monday 4 June in the Quarter-Finals, the winner to play the Semi-Final at the winner of Mainland PDA v Avon United.

Weekend Review 5-6 May
Both Presidents sides top of the tables
7 May 2007
Both of Rangers' Presidents side top their respective divisions. Joe Kearns and Jason Wells each continued their record of scoring in every match they've played this season as Presidents B won 2-1 at Woolston Technical. The Dipsticks knocked Halswell off the top of Presidents C winning 2-1 against the Hawks. In contrast, a narrow 1-0 loss to Western in the Mainland Premier League keeps Rangers at the bottom of the table, 5 points behind Nelson Suburbs. Ben Hughes scored the Western goal and the league leaders were "relieved" to come away with the points. In the Womens Premier League, Rangers had their first loss of the season 5-0 to Ferrymead Bays. Rangers hit the post and Erin Heine and Darcy Willis failed to hit the target with a couple of shots from six yards out in the first half. Rangers' lack of depth was exposed with several key players such as Kassia Ford, Chloe Williams and Laura Hughes absent. The Women drop to third place and play Mainland PDA at English Park 7pm, Tuesday 8 May. The Womens Reserves had yet another narrow loss: 2-1 at Halswell. Four losses is a seemingly poor record, but they could have had something out of each game. Against Halswell, Rangers hit the post and conceded an unlucky own goal. Mens Division 2 were outclassed 4-0 by a strong Ferrymead Bays side. In a reverse of last years' Cup Final Masters A lost 1-0 to Halswell, while the Spikes picked up a win in Masters 45, 5-2 over Cashmere.

Women move up to 2nd;
Mens first team continue to break records
1 May 2007
In the Womens Premier League, Rangers moved up to 2nd place with a 5-0 win over Burnside. A long-range Kassia Ford effort gave Rangers a 1-0 half-time lead, with Erin Heine moving up the league's golden boot ladder with 2 goals. Darcy Willis and an own goal rounding off the scoring for Rangers. A tougher match against Ferrymead Bays looms this coming weekend. The Rangers Womens Division 1 had another narrow loss, 2-3 at New Brighton on Sunday. Rangers were 3-0 down midway through the second half, despite hitting the posts twice in the first half (in which they started strongest). A good comeback but the final whistle was blown too soon for Rangers to be able to collect their first points of the season.
The Mens First Team slumped to their worst League result since the Hurley Shield was the League Championship. The Shield is now a challenge competition and was retained by Ferrymead Bays in their 8-0 win over Rangers. The loss was compounded by news that Halswell have been awarded two extra points as Richmond played an ineligible player last week in their 2-2 draw. With a third of the matches played in the competition, Rangers are 4 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
There were wins for Mens Division 2 (4-3 v HSOB, Rangers trailed 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining). Both Presidents sides (Bees 6-2 v Nomads; Dipsticks 4-1 v Ashburton), and Masters Division 1 picked up their first win of the season: 3-1 at Papanui Redwood.
Weekend Review 21-22 April
MPL 4-2 win
24 Apr 2007
A 4-2 win at Nelson Suburbs provided Rangers with a first win (and first goals for) of the season in the Mainland Premier League. Niklas Gebhardt, Andy Grant, James Stewart and Chris Williams all scored for Rangers, with Suburbs scoring two penalties. The result sees Rangers two points behind Halswell and 3 points behind Suburbs.
Nelson Mail match report | The Press match report
Rangers maintained 3rd place in the Womens Premier League, with a 2-2 draw with 2nd placed Western. Two Chloe Williams goals gave Rangers a 2-0 half-time lead. Chloe's 2nd was a beautiful shot into the top corner past Mainland Pride keeper Megan Andrews.
In Mens Division 2, Snow's team smashed Universities 10-1, which was almost incredibly not the highest score by a Rangers team this weekend as the Grade 16 Girls scored 17 at Kaiapoi. Wins also to both Presidents teams, but both Masters teams suffered 2-0 losses. The Mens Reserves drew 2-2 at Avon United in an early kick-off (10.30am).

So close to a goal; Senior grades start
17 Apr 2007
Observers spoke of millimetres as chances went begging for Rangers mens first team against Halswell at Eric Adam Park. Although Halswell won 3-0, it is reported that Rangers had enough chances to win the match. Aaron McGovern played his second consecutive game as goalkeeper. The Mens Reserves lost 4-0 to Halswell after being reduced to ten players in the first half.
Lots of Rangers' goals if not quite some of the right results in other senior grades. Mens Division 2 were outplayed at Cuthberts by Burnside, going down 6-2. Presidents B celebrated promotion by thumping Rolleston 5-1, Mark Shepherd opening the scoring, with Phil Harrison, Joe Kearns (penalty), an own goal, and a long range strike by Jason Wells giving Rangers a 5-0 half-time lead. The Dipsticks went down 3-2 to Nomads in Presidents C. Masters Div 1 drew 1-1 at New Brighton, while the Spikes lost 5-3 to Western (who have had more experience in the grade) in the over 45s division.
Due to Mainland PDA having players at a national camp, there was no game for the Womens First Team. The Womens Div 1 side conceded a late goal on Sunday to lose 3-2 at Western.

Halswell visit Eric Adam Pk;
Senior grades start
13 Apr 2007
Getting off the bottom is possible for the Mens First Team this weekend when they host Halswell United who are only 1 point ahead in the Mainland Premier League, 2.45pm, Saturday, Eric Adam Park. The Reserves will look to regain some form when they face Halswell in the preceding game at 12.30pm. Halswell are unbeaten in the PDL this season.
There is no game for the Womens First Team as their Premier League match v Mainland PDA is postponed due to the PDA having players away at a national training camp. On Sunday, Rangers Womens Division 1 side play Western at Walter Park (10.30am). Western finished second in the grade last season.
The Mens senior grades commence this Saturday. Rangers Division 2 (Snow's) host Burnside, Presidents B (Barry's) host Rolleston and Masters +45 (Spikes) host Western (all Cuthberts 2.30pm). The Masters Division 1 side travel to New Brighton, and the Dipsticks host Nomads at Burwood Park in Presidents C.
Easter Review
Mainland Premier League getting closer to scoring;
Womens First Team up to second place
12 Apr 2007
Rangers are still without a goal or a point in the Mainland Premier League this season, following a 5-0 loss at Nomads on Saturday and a narrow 2-0 loss to Woolston Technical on Monday. In both matches all the goals came in the first half. The closest Rangers came to scoring was in the match v Woolston Technical, with the frame of the goal struck, the ball cleared off the line and a couple of shots narrowly wide in separate incidents. The other notable point was the goalkeeper for Monday's match. With Alan Stroud ill and Connor Chellew awaiting bionic arm still injured, it was up to midfielder (usually) Aaron McGovern to be the last line of defence. Rangers now face a bottom-of-the table clash at home to Halswell United (who are only one point ahead) on Saturday.
Contrasting fortunes for the Mens Reserves over Easter. A great 1-1 draw at last year's champions Nomads on Saturday (Charlie Wale smashing a free-kick into the top corner past ex-Rangers keeper Jason Stuthridge) was followed up by a crushing 11-0 loss to Woolston Technical on Monday.
Second place is where the Womens First Team find themselves despite trailing 2-0 at Halswell United early on. Two Erin Heine goals and one to Kassia Ford saw the scoreline end 3-2 in Rangers' favour. Rangers v Mainland PDA originally scheduled for this coming Saturday has been postponed due to the PDA having players away at a national training camp.
Easter Preview
Mainland Premier League double header
6 Apr 2007
Two tough matches for Rangers in the Mainland Premier League over Easter. First up, a visit to Nomads United on Saturday (2.45pm, Tulett Park). Nomads have won both their matches this season, beating Halswell on the opening day, and then winning 3-1 at Nelson Suburbs last week. Jordan Buchanan and Gavin Jeffs are two former Rangers players at Nomads this season.
On Monday, Rangers host Woolston Technical at Eric Adam Park. (2pm kick off). The visitors are a newly formed club, the merger of Woolston and Technical, and have taken Technical's place in the Mainland Premier League. WoolTech have had a win over Western, but started the season off with a loss at home to Nelson Suburbs.
Rangers' Mens Reserves also have two games in the Player Development League this weekend, mirroring the first team, with: Nomads at Tulett (12.30pm) on Saturday; and Woolston Technical at Eric Adam Park (12 noon). Rangers will look to build on a good start to the season after beating Burnside 1-0 last week. In other results last week, Western beat Woolston Technical 4-1 and Nomads won 2-1 at Avon.
In the Womens Premier League, Rangers have an opportunity to climb the table after a visit to Halswell United (12.30pm, Saturday, Halswell Domain). With Mainland PDA's next few matches postponed (including the game v Rangers, originally scheduled for 14 April), a win will put Rangers above both them and Ferrymead Bays (PDA's scheduled opponents). New Brighton have already picked up points for the weekend as Burnside have defaulted to them. Halswell last week lost 9-0 to Mainland PDA, while Rangers beat Avon United 4-2. Note that kick-off times in the Womens Premier League have, for the rest of the season, reverted to 12.30pm.

Good start for Mens Reserves, Womens First Team
Mens First Team beaten by Solomon Is
3 Apr 2007
On Saturday, in the Mainland Premier League, Richmond City's Solomon Island internationals tore Rangers apart 4-0 at Eric Adam Park. Benji Totori, who was the NZFC leading scorer, Batram Suri and Michael Fifi scored Richmond's goals. Richmond still reportedly have other Solomon Islanders to come into their squad and will likely tear other defences apart. In Alan Walker's first game in charge, Rangers failed to open their 2007 league scoring, but came close hitting the post late in the game. With Connor Chellew out with a broken wrist, it was a recall for veteran goalkeeper Alan Stroud, who made his 225th first team appearance for Rangers and made some great saves to keep the scoreline down.
In contrast, it was a great start to the season for the Mens Reserve team, who beat Burnside 1-0 at Eric Adam Park in the Player Development League. Gino Fortuin scored with five minutes remaining after beating a player and then curling a shot in from the edge of the penalty area. Rangers also had a great start to the Womens Premier League beating newcomers Avon United 4-2, with goals to Erin Heine (2), Kassia Ford and Chloe Williams.

New coach for Men; Womens Premier commences
30 Mar 2007
Alan Walker has his first game as Mens First Team Coach following the resignation of Harry McCosh earlier this week. The club thanks Harry for rebuilding the side and keeping the team in the Premier League over the past 2 seasons. Alan Walker has been coaching the reserves this year and is familiar with the first team squad. He will be looking for a good start against Richmond City on Saturday at 2pm at Eric Adam Park. Richmond lost 3-1 at home to Ferrymead Bays last week. The newly-promoted Nelson-based side will likely not feature all of their Solomon Islanders from Manawatu. A fortnight ago the two teams met in a friendly, a 2-2 draw at Eric Adam Park. Michael Fifi and Batram Suri scored for Richmond early on and Rangers scoring twice towards the end of the game. The match will be preceded at 12 noon by the first game of the PDL (Reserves) between Rangers and Burnside.
The 2007 Womens Premier League commences on Saturday 31 March, with Rangers taking on newcomers Avon United at Avon Park at 2.30pm. Although some media have installed Rangers as favourites [PDF] for this game, those who saw Avon in the New Brighton Tournament against our experimental reserve team will know that Rangers will probably have to work hard to make a good start to the season.

7th places in Brighton Tournaments; Bad start to MPL for Rangers
27 Mar 2007
The Rangers Mens and Womens Reserve teams each finished in 7th place in the New Brighton Tournaments. On Saturday, the Men beat Shirley BHS 2-1 after extra time in their playoff. Yorick Goodwin opening the scoring, netting a rebound off his own tap-(almost)-in; which he should have finished properly the first time. Shirley BHS equalised shortly after. Despite Rangers dominating the second half and creating many opportunities, it wasn't until extra time that Rangers scored the winner.
Rangers Women Reserves raced to an early 3-0 lead in their 7/8 playoff (90 minute game) with New Brighton B on Sunday morning. A hat-trick in the first 25 minutes from Hannah Freestone (one of two impressive youth team players making their first senior-level appearance for Rangers - Paige Moore being the other), providing the finishing touches that were lacking in last week's goalless encounter with Cashmere. Sloppy defending by Rangers saw a 4-1 half-time lead diminished to 4-3. A strong finish could have resulted in Rangers winning by more than the 5-3 scoreline - the Brighton posts were rattled and some desperate Brighton defending denied Rangers more goals.
A dismal first-up performance for Rangers in the 2007 Mainland Premier League. A 6-0 loss to Western. On Sunday afternoon, at English Park, Rangers held out Western for half-an-hour, and produced some long-range shots of their own. But in a three minute spell, Gareth Turnbull was allowed two free headers and scored twice. Turnbull's hat-trick came in added time in the first half. A mix-up at the back, saw Turnbull through to put the ball into an empty net. Matt Boyd, Gareth Turnbull (his 4th goal) and a Simon Rennell penalty in the second half completed the rout. The Western goalkeeper didn't have a shot to save, while Rangers' keeper Connor Chellew stopped several chances which had looked like certain goals. Harry McCosh did not have a full squad to choose from, with players such as Hue Frame, John Gough and Mike Berry notable absences. Rangers' captain Andy Grant played (but only in the first half) and Wiremu Peircey was substituted on midway through the second half, despite reports of both carrying niggling injuries. However, the injuries can not be excuses for defensive sloppiness, failure to retain possession with simple passes and failure to create meaningful opportunities. The result is now history - being Rangers' worst result since the 1993 Chatham Cup Final, and worst league result (excluding National League) since 1965 (Hurley Shield 0-7, v Western). It is the worst start to a league season for Rangers since records began (1957). The club expects the team to regroup and improve for next Saturday's match at home to Richmond City, 2pm at Eric Adam Park.

2007 Mainland Premier League commences
23 Mar 2007
The Mainland Premier League kicks off on Saturday 24 March, with Woolston Technical playing Nelson Suburbs at English Park. Rangers play away to Western at English Park at 2.30pm on Sunday, preceded at Noon by Halswell v Nomads. Rangers will look to build on a good finish to a pre-season friendly with Richmond City last week. After conceding two early goals, Rangers' Alex Williams scored a goal and created one for Jose Matiz in the 2-2 draw. Western, who lost the UMBRO Rangers Tournament Final to Technical on a penalty shoot-out, had a narrow 1-0 victory over Rangers early on in the Tournament. With better finishing, Rangers could have had something out of that match and a Wiremu Peircey dipping shot hit the Western crossbar. In the previous MPL match between the clubs, in July last year, Rangers won 2-1 with goals to James Stewart and Vitalijs Teplovs.
Our Mens and Womens Reserve teams each have 7/8th place playoffs in their respective New Brighton Tournament matches this weekend. Poor finishing saw Rangers lose 1-0 to Western last weekend in the mens section. Rangers will now play Shirley Boys High School at Bexley at 12 Noon on Saturday. Poor finishing was also in evidence for Rangers women reserves last week, as the 40 minute semi-final against Cashmere went to a penalty shoot-out. Rangers had around ten clear scoring chances in the match, with Cashmere not creating any. But after the 0-0 draw, the penalties went Cashmere's way, and Rangers will play a 90 minute match for 7/8 at 10am on Sunday at Bexley.
2007 UMBRO Rangers Tournament Final
Technical 0 Western 0 aet (Tech win 4-2 pens)
11 Mar 2007
A warm day saw the two finalists create a handful of chances each but failed to produce any goals in 120 minutes. In the penalty shoot-out, Technical's goalkeeper, Jordan Ashton saved two of Western's penalties, while the green and gold's shooters made no mistake with any of their four penalties.
Nomads United claimed third place in the Tournament, overwhelming Halswell United 3-0 with Greg Feutz scoring twice (including 1 penalty) and Rami Dawwas netting the other. Halswell had called Greg Brand (Rangers' goalkeeper last year) out of retirement for a one-off appearance and he made several good saves.

Semi-Final Review:
Western v Tech in Final
6 Mar 2007
Western will play Technical in the 2007 UMBRO Rangers Tournament Final at 3pm, Sunday 11 March at Eric Adam Park. In the first semi-final, Western beat Halswell United 2-0. Blazej Wieclawski opened the scoring after half an hour (according to the team card's noted goalscorers - some spectators claim it was instead Ben Hughes) and Dave Mawhinney broke through the middle to avoid the offside trap in added time at the end of the match. In the second semi-final, N Sanjuku scrambled the ball home for Technical, to give them the lead on the hour mark, in a 1-0 win over Nomads United. Nomads' Greg Feutz and Daniel Burns had each put the ball onto the crossbar in the first half. The two losing semi-finalists will meet in the playoff for 3rd/4th, at 1pm Sunday, immediately preceding the Final.

Matchday 6 Review:
Halswell through; Worst results for Rangers since 1970
1 Mar 2007
Halswell United overwhelmed Avon United 4-0 to qualify for the semi-finals as Winners of Group A. Steve Neame and Dave Pinese gave Halswell a 2-0 lead after half-an-hour. Shortly before half-time, James Thompson scored with a 30-metre shot into the top corner. A Steve Neame header saw the ball rebound off the Avon crossbar after an hour. Ewan Bakker rounded off the win with the fourth goal in 82nd minute. Halswell will face Western in the first semi-final (6.15pm), with Nomads playing Technical in the second semi-final (8pm). Both games on Tuesday 6 March at Eric Adam Park.
In Group B, Rangers lost 4-2 to Christchurch United, both teams having, prior to the game, been eliminated from potential semi-final qualification. In the 20th minute, Wiremu Peircey finished off a good move involving Nik Gebhardt and Alex Williams to put Rangers in the lead. It was a short-lived lead though, as a minute later Nic Christidis impeded a United player and L Hinton equalised from the penalty spot. Steward Quan scored twice within 3 minutes shortly before half-time to give United a 3-1 half-time lead. Mike Berry gave Rangers a glimpse of getting back into the game on the hour with a goal, but L Hinton wrapped up the points for United with 13 minutes remaining. Results-wise, the 2007 Tournament has been Rangers' worst since 1970 (back then Rangers finished bottom of a 3-team group and lost both the group games without scoring a goal).

Group B topped by Nomads; Group A still tight
27 Feb 2007
As the rain started to fall after 15 minutes of the second game of the night at Eric Adam Park, Luke Petrie scored the only goal of the match to give Nomads United a 1-0 win over Western. A result that secures Nomads' top place in Group B, with Western qualifying in second place.
In Group A, Technical qualified for the semi-finals, despite a 2-1 loss to Ferrymead Bays. Both sides had a player sent off. Denis Zatyko (Bays) and Jamie Smith of Technical seeing red. Goalscorers were Souchay Rattanong, with two for Bays, and Tommy Lancaster for Technical. Bays can qualify for the semi-finals only if Avon and Halswell draw. Otherwise, the winner of Thursday's match will progress to Tuesday's semi-finals.

Rangers out
22 Feb 2007
Nomads United have cruised into the semi-finals of the UMBRO Rangers Tournament with a 4-1 win over Rangers, which saw the hosts and Christchurch United eliminated and Western through, despite all still having one group game remaining. Symon Beedles created Rangers' best chance of the first half, but shot narrowly wide in the 25th minute. Two minutes later R Dawwas scored for Nomads to give them the half-time lead. Nomads dominated the second half and look the best side seen in the Tournament this year. Greg Feutz scored Nomads' second, ten minutes after the interval. Rangers striker Byron Goodwin's father played in goal for Rangers (an oddity of having both father and son play for Rangers' first team in the same match). J Goodwin, busy throughout the game, made a great save in the 60th minute to tip a Nomads shot onto the post and out. Unfortunately, Gareth Rowe scored from the resulting corner. Wiremu Peircey scored for Rangers with a lob over the keeper with quarter of an hour remaining, but Rangers never looked like getting back into the match, and Dave Tregenza emphasised Nomads' win in the last few minutes to make it 4-1. Nomads and Western playoff for top spot in Group B at 8pm, Tuesday. Rangers and Chch United meet on Thursday at 8pm.
In Group A, Ferrymead Bays came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Halswell. The Hawks hit the cross bar twice in the match, first was early on, followed shortly afterwards by a Dave Pinese goal after he was on the end of a nice through ball. Five minutes before the break, Pinese robbed a Bays defender and scored to make it 2-0. Callum Fraser grabbed one back for Bays on the hour with a long range lob. Five minutes later, Denis Zatyko equalised with a long-range shot, which the Halswell goalkeeper got to and almost parried, yet it still entered the goal. Ferrymead Bays need a win over Technical on Tuesday (6.15pm ko) to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, while Avon and Halswell finish this tight group on Thursday (6.15pm ko).

Wins for Tech and Western
20 Feb 2007
A first half penalty taken by Jamie Smith and a second-half goal by Tommy Lancaster sent Technical top of Group A with a 2-0 win over Avon. In Group B, Western went top with a 3-1 win against Christchurch United. Sam Quan of United was sent off in the first half for receiving two yellow cards. Five minutes into the second half, Kris O'Neill opened the scoring for Western with a long-range shot. United equalised quarter of an hour later, when Abdi Fararh headed a cross from the right in at the far post. Shortly afterwards, Western hit the post. Later, with 15 minutes remaining, Danny Hill prodded the ball in. Max Hanna wrapped up the points in added time for Western, scoring from a quick break.

Western squeeze past Rangers
15 Feb 2007
A Simon Rennell penalty, given after the referee thought there was some sort of foul play, late in the first half was enough to provide Western with a 1-0 win over Rangers. The hosts had enough chances to get something out of the match, but spurned several opportunities. Both sides hit the frame of the goal, with W. Peircey smashing the Western crossbar with a dipping shot shortly after halftime, and Western hitting the post a couple of minutes later. In the preceding match, Technical and Halswell drew 0-0.

Upset and records broken
14 Feb 2007
A Mark Talbot header early in the second half gave Avon United a deserved 1-0 win over Ferrymead Bays in an upset in last night's opening match of the 2007 UMBRO Rangers Tournament. In the second match, Nomads United attained their highest ever win in the Rangers Tournament with a 6-0 demolition of Christchurch United. It was also Christchurch United's heaviest known defeat in the Tournament. A first-half hat-trick to Jean-Claude de Joux was followed in the second half with goals to Greg Feutz and Luke Petrie, with Gavin Jeffs finishing it off in stoppage time. Rangers fans will remember Jeffs from his time at Rangers, which included scoring 4 goals on Rangers' debut in 2001 against Universities in a 5-1 win in the Rangers Tournament. Action continues on Thursday with Technical playing Halswell at 6.15pm, followed at 8pm with Rangers v Western, in a repeat of last year's Final. All matches at Eric Adam Park.
